Common Name: Road Kill Cactus. Sour Prickly Pear.
Origin: Mexico.
Hardiness: Hardy down to -3 degrees of lower if kept dry but best kept frost free.
Growth Characteristics: Very easy to grow. Tree-like cactus. Olive-green, flat and thin but ‘bumpy’ pads. Virtually spineless but clustered glochids. Small orange-yellow flowers followed by red coloured edible fruit. Can reach 6m tall when mature. Require little maintenance.

Exposure: Exposed/sheltered.
Soil: Well drained soil. Gritty.
Moisture: Water during growing season. Keep dry in winter.
Feeding: Feed well during summer with a balanced liquid cactus fertilizer.

The Opuntia Rubescens ‘Consolea’ is a dense tree-like variety of cactus. The bumpy pads are smallish, flat and paddle shaped, olive green in colour. Virtually spine free although there are tiny glochids in small clusters. Small yellow-orange flowers appear in April/May followed by red coloured egg shaped fruit
Very easy to keep, great for growing in pots, needing minimal maintenance. Very attractive and durable.
