    Latin Name: Opuntia Polycantha var Hystricina

    Common Name: Grizzlybear Prickly Pear, Porcupine Prickly Pear.

    Origin: Southwestern United States, Canada, Alberta to Western Texas, New Mexico, Southeastern Utah.

    Hardiness: Hardy down to -20 or lower

    Growth Characteristics: Compact clumping perennial Cactus.  Flattened fleshy oval pads. Downward pointing white spines up to 10cm. Flowers are pink followed by light green fruit densely covered in spines.

    Sun: Full sun/partial shade.

    Exposure: Exposed/Sheltered.

    Soil: Well drained soil. Gritty.

    Moisture: Water around every 10-14 days. Allow to dry between waterings. Keep dry in winter.

    The Opuntia Polycantha var Hystricina is a clumping perennial. Flattened fleshy pads are rounded and oval in shape. Long white downward pointing spinescan be up to 10cm long are brittle and hair-like.

    Pink flowers are are followed by light green fruit which are covered in dense spines.

    Very easy to keep, great for growing in pots and needs minimal maintenance. This variety of cacti is very cold hardy and kept dry  in winter will withstand temperatures down to around -20  or lower, surviving long freezes.
