    Stapelia Hirsuta

The Stapelia Hirsuta is a fascinating succulent plant, not a member of the cactus family although it does resemble one. Clump forming light green spineless stems are angled and upright. In full sun and during the winter months these can take on a reddish hue. The flowers are spectacular,  between 5-15cm in diameter and are freely produced from late summer to late Autumn. Dark red/purple in colour the flower is flat and deeply lobed, densely shaggy in the centre with a silky texture and fine hairs around its margins. The flower also gives off quite a sickly sweet scent, its way of ensuring pollination, but it is not overpowering even close up .

Very easy to keep, great for growing in pots needing minimal maintenance
