Latin Name: Opuntia Robusta

Common Name: Wheel Cactus, Robust Prickly Pear, Silver Dollar Cactus, Wheel Pear, Silver Dollar Prickly Pear.

Origin: Central and Northern Mexico.

Hardiness: Hardy down to -5 for short periods if keep dry.

Growth Characteristics: Very showy, vigorous prickly pear. Silver-blue large, thick flattened pads. Variable areoles with yellowish-brownish glochids and 1-5 white spines up to 4cm long. Bright yellow flowers with green tint in the centre, 5-8cm in diameter. Many barrel shaped edible fruit. Low maintenance. Drought tolerant. Tolerates neglect.

Sun: Full sun/partial shade.

Exposure: Sheltered.

Soil: Well drained soil. Gritty.

Moisture: Water during growing season. Allow to dry between waterings. Keep completely dry in winter.

Opuntia Robusta Cacti. Prickly Pear
The Opuntia Robusta Cacti is a large and very showy shrubby perennial cactus. Flattened, thick pads are a striking silvery-blue colour and can reach up to 50cm each in size, perfect for providing a dramatic accent to your garden design. Small areoles variable in size have tufts of yellowish- brownish glochids and 1-5 sharp spines up to 4cm long.

Flowers usually 5-8cm in diameter are a bright yellow colour with a green tint in the middle are followed by many large barrel shaped edible fleshy fruit deep red in colour.

Very easy to keep, great for growing in pots, needs minimal maintenance and even tolerates neglect.
