    Latania Lontaroides. Red Latan Palm
The Latania Lontaroides is natve to the Island of Reunion where it has become classified as endangered.  A very ornamental palm with a rounded crown of large fan-shaped stiff leaves. When young the leaves, petioles, leaf margins and veins are all tinged with a reddish colour. As they mature the leaves do lose this colour and turn to green, although it can take up to 15 years. The leaf stems and leaf margins do however retain the colour. The Red Latan Palm is slow growing with a solitary trunk, which is relatively smooth but lightly ringed by leaf scars of old leaves and is slightly swollen at the base.

Exhibits a high tolerance of salt, these palms also make excellent pot plants when young. Plant in well draining sandy soil in a sunny posisition. A really attractive palm to have.
