    Common Name: Fire Barrel Cactus.

    Origin: North West Mexico.

    Hardiness: -3 if dry

    Growth Characteristics: Very showy cylindrical Cactus. 16-24 prominent acute ribs. Young areoles are light-grey felted. Curved and twisted central spines reddish in colour are flattened between 6-10mm wid. 8-12 whitish coloured radials slender and speading up to 6cm long. Red coloured funnel shaped flowers  about 5cm long Yellow fruit. Slow growing.

    Sun: Full sun.

    Exposure: Sheltered.

    Soil: Fast draining soil. Gritty.

    Moisture: Water around every 14 days. Allow to dry between waterings. Keep dry in winter.

    The Ferrocactus Coloratus is a very attractive Cactus with amazing spines. Usually a solitary variety of cacti where the young specimens are globe shaped and more mature plants take on a cylindrical form. Commonly called the Fire Barrel Cactus the green stem has 16-24 prominent acute ribs. The Spines are clearly differentiated, 7-13 stout central spines, reddish in colour can often be between 6-10mm wide(flattened), be curved and twisted where as the 8-12 radial spines are whitish in colour, slender, straight and spreading, up to 6cm long
