CLEISTOCACTUS STRAUSII Info
Latin Name: Cleistocactus Strausii.
Common Name: Silver Torch Cactus, Silver Torch, Snow Pole, Woody Torch.
Origin: Regions of S.Bolivia and Argentina above 3000m.
Hardiness: Hardy down to -5 degrees.
Growth Characteristics: Evergreen perennial columnar Cactus. Stems green-grey in colour with around 25 narrow ribs. Densley packed areoles, each with 30 thin white spines, 2cm long and 4 stouter pale yellow/brown ones up to 5cm long. Cylindrical shaped flowers, deep red-burgundy in colour. Easy to grow.
Sun: Full sun.
Exposure: Sheltered.
Soil: Well drained soil. Gritty.
Moisture: Water more in summer and during growing period. Allow to dry between waterings. Keep dry in winter.
Cleistocactus Strausii Cacti. Silver Torch Cactus.
The Cleistocactus Strausii Cactus is a very striking columnar variety of cacti which can eventually branch. Characterized by several slender grey-green columns which look silver-grey because of the short whitish spines completely covering them. Each stem has around 25 narrow ribs and each of the small areoles along the ribs carry between 20-30, 2cm thin white spines together with 4 stouter pale yellow-brown ones up to 5cm in length.
Older plants in summer produce deep red-burgundy coloured tubular shaped flowers, up to 6cms which protrude horizontally from the columns.
